Have Mermaids Replaced Vampires as the New Supernatural "Thing?"

So, in early May the USA today ran a story about how mermaids have become the new "thing." They mention their involvement in the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie and cite the fact that this year will feature the first "Mercon" (okay, guys? That sounds WAAAAAAY too much like "merkin" for comfort). They also bring up the fact that Twilight author Stephenie Meyer is working on a mermaid novel.
What do you guys think? Are mermaids the new vampire?
